Why do we gain weight? Its the calories, whether carbohydrate, fat or protein. Some diets, such as low-carbohydrate diets (example: Zone Diet) induce "ketosis" an undesirable, and abnormal, condition that may cause fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Weight loss Fad Diets are often just old Fad Diets revived.
No food has "special" properties. Heavily restricted diets cannot be maintained for long and they don't teach healthy eating. Special supplements should not replace a healthy balanced diet.
Eat a Wide Variety of Foods
Variety allows you to get the vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemicals
needed for good health. Remember, its not the food, its the amount of food.
Measure your portions until you are certain about your sizes. If in a restaurant, split the meal with a friend or take half home for the next day (works best if you split before you start eating).
Food diaries work. If you keep a food diary and measure portion sizes, you will lose weight. The act of writing down what you are eating helps you to recognize patterns and insure that you are eating a balanced diet. You will also recognize eating "triggers", circumstances that lead to overeating.
